Freedom requires belonging. When people are driven from their homes by persecution, violence, or hatred — or denied basic rights because of who they are — freedom becomes a privilege, not a right. No one chooses to be a refugee. Everyone deserves to live with dignity, safety, and a place to call home.
Did You Know?
- The world is experiencing the highest levels of forced displacement ever recorded. By the end of 2022, over 110 million people had been forcibly displaced worldwide — including refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons — surpassing every previous record and representing more than 1% of all humanity uprooted from their homes. (UNHCR Global Trends Report, 2022)
- Discrimination is a primary engine of displacement. Ethnic, religious, racial, and gender-based persecution remain among the leading drivers of forced migration globally — with minorities, indigenous communities, and marginalized groups consistently overrepresented among the world’s displaced populations, stripped of rights before they are stripped of their homes. (UNHCR / UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues)
- Displaced people face compounding layers of exclusion. Refugees and internally displaced persons are disproportionately denied access to legal employment, education, healthcare, and financial services — meaning displacement doesn’t just remove people from their homes, it systematically dismantles every pathway back to stability, dignity, and self-determination. (UNHCR / World Bank)
- Statelessness — being legally invisible — affects an estimated 4.2 million people worldwide, though the true figure is believed to be significantly higher. Without legal nationality, stateless people cannot access education, healthcare, formal employment, or justice systems, rendering them among the most invisible and vulnerable populations on earth. (UNHCR Global Trends, 2022)
